Force Carrier: The electromagnetic force is mediated by the exchange of discrete packets of energy called photons. Mechanism: Charged particles (like electrons) interact by exchanging virtual photons. The properties of these interactions, such as attraction and repulsion, arise from the properties of these exchanges. Scope: QED successfully explains phenomena ranging from the structure of atoms and molecules to the behavior of light and radio waves.
